Looking Out at the Sea After a Day's Work

Tread light around him
for his deed is done.
He has accomplished
what you required
and the race is almost run.

No blood money now,
payment from your hands,
will end his sorrow.
He will not flee,
nor be sent to foreign lands.

There is not a thing
you ever can do
to end your own guilt.
There are three now
who know the traitor is you.

First, yourself,
who ordered it all.

Next, the poor orphan boy,
who heeded your call.

Finally, your victim,
who suffered the fall.

Pity yourself, then,
and know death is sleep.
Do not worry now
or ever that
she may rise up from the deep.
